Clear aligners make straightening your teeth simple, comfortable, and discreet. At Miller Orthodontics, we’re here to ensure your experience is smooth and rewarding every step of the way. This guide will give you everything you need to know about life with clear aligners – because a stunning smile is just the beginning!

Clear Aligners 101:

Imagine a treatment that fits into your life without anyone noticing. That’s the magic of clear aligners! Here’s how to make the most of them:

  • Wear them consistently: Keep your aligners in for 20–22 hours daily to stay on track.
  • Take them out to eat and drink: The only exception? Water!
  • Follow your schedule: Switch to your next set of aligners as directed—typically every 7 days.

Did You Know? Most patients start seeing results in just a few weeks. A straighter smile might be closer than you think!

Clear aligners are designed to make orthodontic treatment feel effortless. All you need to do is stick to the plan and let them do the rest.

Eating and Drinking: Freedom with a Few Rules

One of the biggest perks of clear aligners? Food freedom! Unlike braces, clear aligners don’t come with a long list of food restrictions. That said, there are still a few important rules to follow:

  • Always remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. This prevents staining and keeps your aligners in top condition.
  • Brush after meals before putting them back in. This keeps your teeth clean and prevents food particles from getting trapped.
  • Use your case! Storing your aligners in a napkin is a surefire way to accidentally throw them away.

Pro Tip: Keep a small kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and your aligner case handy. It’s perfect for on-the-go meals and keeps your routine stress-free.

Caring for Your Aligners

Your clear aligners are designed to stay, well, clear—but only if you care for them properly. Here’s how to keep them in great shape:

  • Rinse them with lukewarm water every time you remove them.
  • Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and clear soap.
  • Soak them in a cleaning solution or use a denture tablet for a deeper clean.

What to Avoid:

  • Hot water— it can warp the plastic.
  • Abrasive toothpaste— it can scratch the surface.
  • Leaving them exposed— always store them in their case.

Think of your aligners as part of your daily self-care routine. A little TLC goes a long way!

What If Something Goes Wrong?

Life happens, and sometimes things don’t go as planned. If something goes wrong with your aligners, don’t worry—we’ve got solutions:

  • Lost aligner? Contact us right away. In the meantime, wear your previous set to maintain progress.
  • Lost an attachment? Attachments are the tooth colored “bumps” that are bonded to the teeth. They are placed at precise points to allow the aligners to grip the teeth as they guide them into their new positions. Sometimes they come unglued because the cement (glue) cannot be stronger than the enamel itself. If you have lost an attachment, give us a call to determine if you need a repair before your next visit.

  • Broken aligner? Call us to discuss whether you should continue wearing it or move to the next set.
  • Fit issues? Use aligner chews to help them seat properly. Persistent issues? Let us know!
  • Button off? Buttons are small anchors that you attach your rubber bands or elastics to. If you are unsure of how to wear them, please give us a call as each patient may be instructed to wear them differently. If you lose a button, call us and we will let you know next steps.

Why You Still Need Your Dentist

Even with clear aligners, regular dental visits are essential. Your dentist ensures your teeth and gums stay healthy throughout treatment:

  • Deep Cleanings: Professional cleanings reach areas your aligners can’t.
  • Cavity Prevention: Your dentist will monitor for any early signs of decay.
  • Collaboration: We work together with your dentist to ensure your smile is as healthy as it is beautiful.

Think of your dentist as a key player on your smile transformation team. Together, we’ll make sure your results are as strong as they are stunning.

Enjoy The Journey to Your Dream Smile

Clear aligners make it easy to celebrate the little victories. Here’s how to keep your momentum going:

  • Track your progress: Take photos at the start of each new set of aligners to see how far you’ve come.
  • Reward yourself: Hit a milestone? Treat yourself to a braces-friendly snack or an outing.
  • Visualize the finish line: Keep reminding yourself of your goal—a beautiful, confident smile!

Every small step counts, and each aligner gets you closer to your dream smile. Celebrate the journey—it’s worth it!
